Getting pole lights to "sparkle"

To get lights to "sparkle" like stars use a smaller aperture.
(larger F/ number, like F/22)

And heres what you get.....

...and a larger aperture (smaller F/ number, like F/3.5)

Variable Aperture

Most of you probably know this but......

Some lenses have a variable aperture. Like between f/3.5 and f/5.6.
When a lens has 2 numbers for f-stops it means it varies as you zoom.
So if you have a 17-50mm F/3.5-5.6 at 17mm it can be at F/3.5 but at 50mm it will be at F/5.6

I have a Canon 28-135 F/3.5-5.6 IS
The IS (image stabilizer) helps a lot with making up for the variable aperture and more.
